Plameň Badín is a civic association. Among other things, the civic association also provides the services of the Voluntary Fire Brigade, especially in the Zvolen district, but also in the wider area as needed. As a civic association, it focuses on cooperation with local governments, legal and natural persons, and other civic associations in the field of fire protection, especially in connection with the provision of rescue, localization, and liquidation work. Meets all personnel and technical conditions within the requirements for Voluntary Fire Brigade category C.
However, the mission of CA Plameň Badín is also to work with children and young people in the field of fire protection. This activity is divided into preventive-educational (fire protection, firefighting equipment, work and orientation in nature and terrain) and sports (firefighting). CA Plameň has been involved in this activity for 13 years and has brought up one young generation. At the 7th year of the Firefighters event in 2019, CA Plameň Badín was awarded for its Preventive and Educational Work.
Funded by the EU Horizon 2020 Green Deal program and coordinated by Università Telematica Pegaso, SILVANUS project includes 49 partners from the European Union, Brazil, Indonesia, and Australia, with a budget of €23 million for a period of 42 months. The SILVANUS project brings together a large consortium of interdisciplinary experts from four continents to combat the threat of forest fires and improve forest resilience against climate change. The key output of the project is the release of a climate resilient forest management platform to prevent and suppress forest fire. SILVANUS relies on environmental, technical and social sciences experts to support regional and national authorities responsible for wildfire management in their respective countries. SILVANUS scientists and research engineers will aid the civil protection authorities to efficiently monitor forest resources, to evaluate biodiversity, to generate more accurate fire risk indicators, and promote safety regulations among the local population affected by wildfire through awareness campaigns.
SILVANUS is on a roll, as the trailblazing pilots fly toward the completion of the platform testing season!
The SILVANUS team is happy to report that the pilot in Slovakia has been successfully carried out.
Organised by Consortium member Technical University of Zvolen, the pilot was preceded by the international scientific conference Advances in Fire and Safety Engineering on October 14th, 2024 in Zvolen in central Slovakia.
The conference included 117 participants, including members of the Fire and Rescue Service, voluntary fire brigades, forestry sector, academia, research organisations, and companies that offer complex solutions in the field protection and safety. SILVANUS team members from 3MON, Thales, Atos, Catalink Ltd, Plamen and Institute of Informatics, Slovak Academy of Sciences, which showcased the SILVANUS platform as an innovative technological solution for wildfire management.
The following day was focused on the pilot exercise, at the Bakova Jama site on the outskirts of Zvolen, where a fire simulation operation was implemented and the platform was tested with an emphasis on the following components:
Fire Detection from IoT Devices Drone Monitoring of Wildfire Behaviour Fire Detection at the Edge using Drone Data Ground Robot Fire Detection (including transport of injured persons and equipment) SILVANUS Citizen Engagement App (Fire Reporting) Decision-support System – Forest Fire Alert System
DSS – SIBYLA
Thank you to SILVANUS partners and Slovak stakeholders from Fire and Rescue Service for organising another successful pilot, as the project is coming closer to the conclusion of the pilot season!

The SILVANUS trial period continued this week with the implementation of the pilot in Slovakia, in the mountainous Pol’ana region in Central Slovakia. The goal of the Slovak pilot was to demonstrate early detection of fire and smoke, followed by the quick and efficient deployment of firefighters, fire trucks, drones, robots, and helicopters until the fire was extinguished, as a trial demonstration in the development of the SILVANUS platform.
SILVANUS partners TUZVO, 3MON, UISAV, FRS MB, PLAMEN, ITTI, ASFOR, SGSP, THALES, EXUS, EDP and VTG worked closely on the implementation of the pilot, which was initiated with the demonstration of a fire and its subsequent systematic detection. The information about the fire (location, link to camera footage) was sent to the operation centre. This followed with a deployment of drones from the Slovak Academy of Sciences, after which firefighters (under the Slovak Ministry of Interior) and the M17 helicopter (provided by the Slovak Ministry of Defence) were navigated and monitored.
Ground robots supplied by 3MON assisted in the transfer of heavy materials and equipment, putting out the fire with a water gun in a complex and hard-to-reach terrain under adverse weather conditions. The robot demonstrated five or six water spray methods. The uniqueness of the robot operation was in the ability to generate multiple types of water flow to counteract the spread of wildfire. A Bambi bucket was attached to the M17 helicopter and was used to deploy large quantities of water to the most active wildfire spots.
With the successful implementation of the 2nd SILVANUS pilot (the 1st one took place in Croatia on the 18th and 19th of April) and its integration of technologies with the deployment of forces, important data was accumulated for the development of the SILVANUS platform.
The Technical University of Zvolen, the Center for Adaptation and Creation of Strategies together with its project partners Institute of Informatics SAV, 3MON and OZ Plameň are organizing a demonstration of the Slovak pilot study of the scientific project SILVANUS "Integrated technological and information platform for the management of forest fires" from April 24 to 26, 2023 .” The planned event will be attended by national and international experts from practice and research in the field of forestry, fire protection, IT, as well as invited guests from the level of municipalities, BBSK, ministries or the HAZ headquarters.
The first day (April 24, 2023) is focused on the presentation of the SILVANUS project and the Slovak pilot study at the Technical University in Zvolen. The program is focused on restructuring Slovakia's forests in conditions of climate change, forest fire management, forestry information system, as well as a demonstration of the SIBYLA growth simulator.
The key day of the presentation of the Slovak pilot study is the second day (April 25, 2023), which is focused on the demonstration of fire extinguishing with the use of information and technical support in the area of interest of the Poľana Biosphere Reserve. As part of the demonstration, the detection of smoke from a fire by a camera system, communication and transmission of fire information between interested parties and operational centers, monitoring of the area using drones and robots, arrival of fire brigades, survey of the area and demonstration of extinguishing methods, as well as, for example, the transport of material resources and injured firefighter using a robot.
An important part of the program will also be the presentation of developed mobile applications to support the intervention and information and technological support of the decision-making process of the management staff.
The demonstration of the Slovak pilot study of the SILVANUS project will be concluded with a workshop on April 26, 2023 in Sielnica, where the participants of the demonstration, the project and invited guests will discuss topics such as the prevention of forest fires, the requirements of firefighters, the incidence of fires in the Poľana Biosphere Reserve, or biodiversity and its resistance to the impact of climate change.
